The Happiness of Blond People

by Elif Shafak

A burnt orange Hay Festival Press book containing two short stories by Elif Shafak: 'The Happiness of Blond People' and 'A Street-Boat', with illustrations by Jeff Fisher.
I was born in 1977 in a shanty house on the outskirts of Istanbul. The destiny I was expected to have was different from the life I have had so far. Back then my father was alive and this was surely not the destiny he had in mind for me. But then, Dad wasn't very good at planning things ahead. He had not planned to take root in Holland either. Nor had he planned to die so soon. This wasn't the life he had envisaged for us. If it were up to him, he would have never closed his barber shop and left his country. For, unlike me, Daddy had a country.
