In her study of the era, Nicholson explores the lives and work of the Bloomsbury set including Dylan and Caitlin Thomas, Augustus John and her grandmother, Vanessa Bell. Stead conjures the same set in his novel Mansfield, a fictionalised account of his fellow New Zealander and Bloomsbury star Katherine Mansfield.
