Work Less, Create More

At 28 years old, Emma Gannon’s “honest and inspirational” voice, as Clemency Burton-Hill described it today, is leading a campaign for flexible working. One of Forbes’ ‘30 under 30’ list for media and marketing, Gannon has just published The Multi-Hyphen Method: Work Less, Create More and Design a Career That Works for You, and has shaped her own varied career by making time for, and money out of, side projects.

Drawing on recent research, data analysis and evidence collected from over 150 interviews, Gannon’s become something of an expert in the field of flexible working. She said recent research predicts that 70 percent of the population will be freelance by 2025, and that technology has helped younger generations to experiment, develop skills and streamline their work.

Gannon described her method which, she said, provides a toolkit so people can begin to work on their own terms. “We are in a confidence crisis at the moment,” she said, and people should go back to basics and start creating careers that work for them.

She questioned the traditional notions of basing success on financial value, and advocated prioritising your time, building constructive connections, self-promoting and outsourcing tasks. She also noted that although branding is important, the product itself has to be up to scratch and that millennials can’t become complacent about continuing to develop professional skills.
