Imagine a Journey - Illustration Competition

We've launched an illustration competition with fantastic prizes to be won, including a visit to the International Children’s Literature Hay Festival in Aarhus, Denmark (26 – 29 October 2017).

Pupils should draw a journey. It can be real or imagined, literal or metaphorical. The illustration should allow others to understand and share in the journey. The best entries will be shared on the Hay Festival Instagram feed.


To enter:

  • Download the Imagine a Journey worksheet
  • Pupils should draw their journey in the box provided and write a short description to explain what the journey is
  • Provide your name, school name and address, as well as confirmation that the work can be shared on social media
  • Competition closes 30 September 2017

Great illustrations will be shared on Hay Festival Instagram feed and the best illustrated journey will be awarded a special prize: the amazing opportunity to attend our International Children’s Festival in Denmark.

The schools of the top ten entries will win £200 towards the school library and copies of the Aarhus anthologies. The schools of the top 20 entries will win copies of the Aarhus anthologies. Terms and conditions apply.

Terms & Conditions of Entry

  • 1. Information on how to enter forms part of these conditions of entry. Participation in this promotion constitutes acceptance of these conditions of entry.
  • 2. Entry is open to residents of Great Britain and Northern Ireland residents only, aged 8-18 years and over. Winners under the age of 18 must be accompanied by or have the consent of an adult to redeem prizes. Directors, management and employees (and the immediate families of directors, management and employees) of the Promoter or the agencies or companies associated with this promotion are ineligible to enter.
  • 3. Entrants will be limited to one entry.
  • 4. The promotion will start at 00:01 on Thursday 25th May 2017 and will close at 23:59 on Saturday 30th September (the “Promotion Period”).
  • 5. Prizes include one family holiday to Aarhus in Denmark.
  • 6. Winners of the family holiday to Denmark who are under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult over the age of 18. Accommodation is based on a family of 4 sharing a family room. A family of 4 consists of 2 adults and 2 children aged 18 years old or under on the dates of travel. Specified accommodation, restaurants and tours are subject to availability at the time of booking. Alternatives may be offered dependant on availability. Winners are able to extend their trip at their own expense. Flight prices will be calculated for an actual quote on request from individual countries. All flights, unless stated, are non-changeable and non-transferable. Once a booking is confirmed, any name or date changes must be made in writing. Prizes are not transferable unless specified otherwise. Unless otherwise notified, Hay Festival will assume that the winner and family have a full passport, valid for at least 6 months on the date of travel. Visas are the responsibility of winners. Winners must have access to a personal email account on the internet.
  • 7. The Prize here is a weekend at the International Children’s Literature Hay Festival, travelling on Friday 27th October, staying in Aarhus on Friday 27th and Saturday 28th and returning to the UK on the afternoon of Sunday 29th October 2017.
  • 8. Hay Festival accepts no responsibility for late, incomplete, incorrectly submitted, corrupted or misdirected entries, network failure or delay.
  • 9. The Promoter and its associated agencies and companies will not be liable to any prize winner and their guest for any loss (including, without limitation, indirect, special or consequential loss or loss of profits), expense or damage which is suffered or sustained (whether or not arising from any person’s negligence) in connection with this promotion or accepting or using any prize, except for any liability which cannot be excluded by law (including personal injury, death and fraud) in which case that liability is limited to the minimum allowable by law.
  • 10. No warranty or guarantee is given by the Promoter in relation to any prize.
  • 11. The prize(s) is/are not transferable or exchangeable and cannot be redeemed for cash or any other form of compensation. In the event for any reason the prize winner does not take an element of the prize at the time stipulated by the Promoter, then that element of the prize will be forfeited by the winner and neither cash nor any other form of compensation will be supplied in lieu of that element of the prize. If for any reason a prize is not available, the Promoter reserves the right to substitute another prize for it, in its sole discretion, of equal or higher value.
  • 12. If for any reason any aspect of this promotion is not capable of running as planned the Promoter may in its sole discretion cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the promotion, or invalidate any affected entries (this includes, without limitation, by reason of infection by computer virus, network failure, bugs, tampering, unauthorised intervention, fraud, technical failures or any cause beyond the control of the Promoter which corrupts or affects the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of this promotion).
  • 13. If any of the winning entries are deemed not to comply with these conditions of entry, the entry will be discarded and a new winner of the prize will be determined by the Promoter.
  • 14. In all aspects of this promotion the Promoter’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into regarding the promotion.
  • 15. The Promoter reserves the right to publish the name and county of residence of the promotion winner. The winner must, at the Promoter’s request, participate in all promotional activity (such as publicity and photography) surrounding the winning of the prizes, free of charge, and they consent to the Promoter using their names and images in promotional material.
  • 16. This Promotion shall be governed by English law.
