Our monthly 'Meet the Haymaker' series shares stories of the change-makers at the heart of Hay Festival and the impact it has had on their lives. This month, get to know Marianne Wamuyu, Book Bunk and Nairobi Litfest Programmes and Events Manager.
What does Hay Festival Global mean to you?
It means full representation—a celebration of ideas, imagination, fun, and everything under the sun under one roof. It’s a space where diverse voices come together to challenge, inspire, and reimagine the world—one conversation at a time.
What’s your favourite Festival memory?
Participating in arts and crafts—letting my inner child flourish! Watching children express themselves creatively and share their views on the world around them was powerful. They remind us why we need to keep building a better future.
Also… playing! Pure joy, laughter, and freedom—definitely a top memory.
Have you ever changed your mind on something having been to a Hay Festival event?
Absolutely! I realised that Hay isn't just for writers and readers—it’s also a space for entrepreneurs, athletes, and makers. It’s a place to enjoy the Festival while also showcasing what you create or sell. You can even throw in a friendly match or two—why not?
Who was the best speaker or performer you saw on a Hay Festival stage?
All the speakers were fantastic, but one standout for me was Tweedy the Clown—legit the funniest person I’ve ever seen. He brought joy to everyone in the room.
What advice do you have for a first-timer at the Festival?
Stay curious. Let yourself wander into events you didn’t plan for. Some of the most unforgettable moments come from surprises. And whatever you do—don’t forget to pick up a souvenir!
Sum up Hay Festival Global in five words or less…
Ideas. Imagination. Humanity. Connection. Change.
