Event 79

Screening: Buena Vista Social Club

Venue: La Cárcel – Filmoteca de Segovia

Directed by Wim Wenders, 1999. Duration: 104 minutes.
In 1996 Ry Cooder travelled to Cuba to record an album with Ibrahim Ferrer and the musicians who had worked on his album Buena Vista Social Club (known in Cuba as ‘the super-granddads’). Wenders went with him: he observed the musicians at work in the studio, as well as recording their lives in Havana. He later filmed them playing two concerts in Amsterdam, and then in New York at Carnegie Hall. Rosa Bosch, the film’s producer, introduces the screening and then discusses the project with journalist Marian Hens.
