Juan Acevedo in conversation with Omar Zevallos

El Cuy

Arequipa 2023,
Juan Acevedo (Peru) will talk to Omar Zevallos about his long career as a cartoonist and his famous comic strip character, El Cuy, which is a funny, tender and brave look at our times. El Cuy was launched in 1979 as a way of making fun of the military dictatorship’s censorship, and the strip has since tackled some of the central matters of Peruvian reality: colonialism, social inequalities and the situation of peasants, indigenous peoples, children and the poor. In this conversation with the artist, those attending will have the opportunity to find out about the creative process involved and the way in which it has been possible to connect with readers over time. A unique opportunity to know more about the creation of an icon of the Latin American cartoon, one that is as meaningful today as it ever was.
