Adania Shibli in conversation with Andrea Aguilar

A finalist for the 2020 National Book Award and the 2021 International Booker Prize for A Minor Detail, Adania Shibli is arguably the central voice of contemporary Palestinian narrative. In this interview, and in conversation with journalist Andrea Aguilar, Adania Shibli will discuss the key elements of her new and highly anticipated novel, Delusion (Random House in Spanish, La Magrana in Catalan).

In Delusion, the seasons change: the light and the intensity of the heat on the land shift, and the landscape's colour changes. Adania Shibli doesn't need to anchor the story in specific places, nor provide names or dates, to transform this novel into a gripping narrative that follows the lives of a young woman and a young man whose paths run parallel, marked by the same reality: the systematic attempt to dispossess Palestinians of their land, their history, and their sense of belonging. And as time marches on, indifferent to expulsions, exile, prison, or torture, Shibli transforms the Palestinian experience into a metaphorical tool for a story about how occupation infiltrates every aspect of daily life and how colonialism not only controls bodies and places, but also seeks to silence stories, erase memories, and break identities.
