Jenny Valentine has won several major prizes for her children’s literature and was awarded a Hay Festival International Fellowship in 2017. Her books, several of which have been published in Spain, include Finding Violet Park and The Double Life of Cassiel Roadnight. Jenny discusses ways to empower adolescents and make themselves better understood. Introduced by Peter Florence.

This outreach event visits schools in Segovia to celebrate Aarhus39. To showcase 39 of the most interesting children’s and young people’s writers under 40 who will be attending the first Hay Festival for Children in Aarhus as part of the Danish city’s European Cultural Capital events this year, writer Ana Cristina Herreros will discuss her stories and the art of writing with local children.

Too Good to Waste seeks to question the validity of the current relationship between wood consumption and fashion. Contrary to popular perception, not all forests are disappearing. In fact, the vast American hardwood forest is a quickly expanding resource and the volume of its standing timber has more than doubled in the last 50 years.
A guided tour of the American Hardwood Export Council’s Too Good to Waste project, an interactive installation designed by Barcelona-based architect Benedetta Tagliabue, and crafted by furniture makers Benchmark.

Literature into television series
How the major television series are already a body of literature that has attracted the narrative talent no longer found in cinema. From G.R.R. Martin to Nic Pizzolatto (True Detective), Aaron Sorkin or David Simon (The WireÇ), the best screenplay writers are literati with global influence. Jesús Calero, Editor in Chief of ABC’s arts pages, talks to a range of writers at this year’s Hay Festival Segovia about the new era of television storytelling.
Digital reading: a key area for books
Writer Ángela Vallvey, Javier Pascual Echalecu, General Deputy Director of the Book, the Reading and the Spanish Letters (MECD), Stephan Fuetterer, chair of the Association of directors of communication, and Pedro de Andrés, publisher and vice president of CEDRO, the Spanish Centre for Reprographic Rights, analyse the measures needed to encourage reading and in particular through digital means.

They discuss what can be done to improve awareness of scientific issues in Spanish, a field that is dominated by English-language writing. This documentary tells the story of the last survivor of the Surrealists. Carrington was a woman hungry for freedom, who escaped from a strict London upbringing to Paris the first step in an eventful life that took her from one continent to another, through historic events and artistic movements. All of this is reflected in dream-like fashion through painting, cinema and literature inspired by her stay at a psychiatric hospital in Santander. She eventually found a spiritual and creative kinship in Mexico, where she was interviewed for this documentary.

Based on an idea by Dave Venables, director of the American Hardwood Export Council, designed by Architect Benedetta Tagliabue, and carried out by Sean Sutcliffe of Benchmark Furniture, one of the best-known furniture makers in Europe, Too Good to Waste, an exhibition in Segovia’s Plaza Mayor is an exciting initiative to promote new approaches to sustainable design. Chaired by Michelangelo Giombini.
Inspired by the Samuel Beckett and Italo Calvino, the sculptor Roberto Barni works on the idea of the human condition and presents mankind anonymously in enigmatic situations. His pieces, featuring figures seemingly lost or captured off-balance, will be displayed in the gardens of the Huerto de Félix Ortiz, where the opening will feature a lyrical concert by the Prosegur Foundation in collaboration with the Albéniz Foundation, played by students of the Reina Sofía Music School.
In the event of rain, the concert will be transferred to Casa de la Moneda at the same time.
Spanish writer Antonio Muñoz Molina and philosopher A.C. Grayling meet again in Segovia after a two-year absence, that has brought with it many changes to the world, to talk to Hay Festival founder and director Peter Florence about ethics in today’s world. On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s Protestant rebellion, the three explore the huge impact of the Protestant Reformation and the way it has changed society, the arts and politics in many countries in the West.

Internationally acclaimed architect Richard Rogers, Pritzker Prize winner in 2007 and one of the world’s leading representatives of contemporary urban planning, talks about his vision for the future of the planet’s cities with Martha Thorne, Executive Director of the Pritzker Prize and Dean of IE University’s School of Architecture and Design. Among Rogers’ landmark buildings are the Pompidou Centre in Paris, the Lloyd’s building in London and Madrid’s T4 at Barajas Airport. He also designed the headquarters of the Protos winery in Peñafiel, close to Segovia. He and his team are currently working on the Castellana Norte project to develop the northern edge of the Spanish capital.

Workshop for literary organisations
This one-hour networking session brings together local literary organisations, festivals and venues with five members of the European platform, Literature Across Frontiers to discuss programming and audience development ideas for live literary events with international content. This is a closed session chaired by Benjamin Rosado of El Mundo.
