Activities in tribute to Mario Vargas Llosa

The loss of such an important figure as Mario Vargas Llosa will be well-deservedly recognized at Hay Festival Arequipa 2025. The Nobel Prize winner, who was one of the stars of the Festival in 2018, will be very present with three panels in his memory, alongside book presentations that reflect his literary figure and political thought, an exhibition run by his daughter a book with his talks at Hay Festival and a public book reading.

Exposición fotográfica Varguitas, la verdad de las mentiras

Varguitas, la verdad de las mentiras es una exposición fotográfica de Morgana Vargas Llosa, su hija, que ofrece una mirada íntima al universo del Nobel arequipeño. A través de imágenes, muchas inéditas, la muestra recorre tanto el proceso creativo del escritor como la vida familiar que nutrió su obra. Dos ejes articulan el recorrido: Mario, el escribidor, dedicado a su labor literaria, y el hombre y su tribu, centrado en los lazos afectivos y vitales que marcaron su historia. La curaduría está a cargo de Alejandro Castellote, reconocido crítico y curador de fotografía, cuya trayectoria internacional ha impulsado la difusión de autores iberoamericanos. La producción recae en Carlos Caamaño, curador y gestor cultural con una amplia experiencia en proyectos artísticos de gran escala, que aporta solidez y visión a la realización de la muestra.

Book of Mario Vargas Llosa's Talks at the Hay Festival

Hay Festival and Fondo de Cultura Económica will publish a book of talks given by Mario Vargas Llosa at various Hay Festivals. From his first visit to Hay-on-Wye (Wales, United Kingdom) in 1996, to the events he participated in Segovia (Spain), Cartagena de Indias (Colombia), Arequipa (Peru), and in digital format during the pandemic. The book will be available during Hay Festival Arequipa 2025.

Continuous Reading of The Way to Paradise
Hay Festival Arequipa and PUCP invite audiences of all ages to a reading aloud of the novel The Way to Paradise, where authors from the Hay Festival Arequipa and PUCP professors will read excerpts from the text continuously. The aim is to extend the reading experience to the streets and create a space for dialogue, exchange, and community around this work that recreates, through fiction, the eventful lives of two paradigmatic figures in modern literature and art, but, above all, in the pursuit of social justice and the ethical and aesthetic ideal: Flora Tristán and her grandson, Paul Gaugin.
