The festival of ideas, the one that inspires and encourages to imagine the world, has announced the complete list of events for this edition of Hay Festival Medellín, taking place from January 28th to February 1st, 2020. 6th Biblioteca de Narrativa Colombiana Prize (EAFIT)
The 6th edition of the Biblioteca de Narrativa Colombiana Prize (VI PBNC) is held in order to stimulate and give credit to the production and publication of literary works in Colombia, and also as a way to promote the reading of high quality literature. Based on the opinion of a competent and independent group of judges, the Prize will be given to the best narrative work in Colombia published the previous year. This 5th PBNC is possible thanks to the partnership with Grupo Familia and Caracol Televisión -companies and institutions fully committed to culture.

Wednesday January 29

The writer Gloria Beatriz Salazar (Colombia) invites the little ones to a journey of discovery of the animals of our country through her collection of stories Aventuras en el paisaje cultural cafetero and books such as La ballena roja que se tragó una danta blanca. After reading and playing, she will share with the boys and girls a space to draw their favorite animals.

Workshop 2. Clara Grima
Clara Grima, a Mathematics doctor from the University of Seville, lecturer and popular mathematician, is the author of ¡Que las matemáticas te acompañen!, a book that reveals the presence of maths in everyday life where, without us noticing it, numbers have great importance. Grima will be with a group of young people to talk to them about one of her firm convictions: everyone loves maths, only many people don’t know it yet.

Workshop 3. Miguel Mendoza Luna
Miguel Mendoza Luna is a Colombian writer and university professor. He completed a master's degree in Creative Writing, beginning to publish books in multiple areas of writing: short story, novel, biography, psychology and children literature. In this activity, he leads a talk-workshop writing about his novel Los diarios secretos de las chicas (in)completas. This is a micro-workshop that seeks to detonate in the participants the immediate invention of characters and stories, and also emotionally talk about famous people in literature to unravel the mystery of what made them unforgettable and universal.

Workshop 4. Francisco Leal Quevedo
The pediatrician and philosopher Francisco Leal Quevedo began writing at age six, publishing his first story using a small rubber press. He is the author of Colombia contada en sus objetos, a book that describes our country through the ball, the bicycle, the carriel, the accordion and more than forty other objects. In this meeting he directs an interactive workshop for boys and girls with some of the objects described in his book.

Fernando Trueba in conversation with Javier Mejía

The film screenwriter, director and producer Fernando Trueba (Spain) has been working in the industry since 1980 when he directed his first work, Ópera prima. Since then he has worked with actors such as Ana Belén, Miranda Richardson, Antonio Banderas, Melanie Griffith, Penelope Cruz, Jean Rochefort and Claudia Cardinale. He has been the Chair of the Spanish Film Academy (which gives the Goya Awards), has been made a Knight of the Arts and Letters in France and has his own star on the Cannes Walk of Fame. In 1993 he won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film for Belle Époque and his films have won a total of nine Goya awards. He will talk about his cinematographic work with Javier Mejía.

How to feed cities in the 21st century. Conference by Rosie Boycott

Baroness Rosie Boycott (United Kingdom) is a British writer, publisher and journalist who has dedicated her career to researching and writing on topics related to food and feminism. In 2008 she was appointed to the London Food Board to advise the city’s mayor on implementing sustainable food policies. In October 2016, the new mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, asked her to lead the development of a new strategy to create a better food system, to cover the complex needs of the very diverse communities that live and work in London. She will talk about the challenges of feeding a growing world population at a time when the need to repair our broken relationship with the environment is more urgent than ever.

David Wallace-Wells in conversation with Dario Valencia
David Wallace-Wells (United States) graduated in History from Brown University and since then has worked as a journalist, producing some outstanding reporting on climate change. He is the author of The Uninhabitable Earth: Life After Warming (2019), a book that deals with the urgent nature of the threats that climate change poses to life on Earth and the ecological disaster that could occur within a generation. He will talk to Darío Valencia.

Alex Beard in conversation with Claudia Restrepo

Alex Beard, a Master’s graduate in Education from London’s Institute of Education, is part of the Teach For All network of independent organizations dedicated to children’s education. He has visited 46 countries, observing and learning different educational systems and practices with teachers and education managers. In his most recent book, Natural Born Learners (2019), Beard transmits some of what he has learned, analysing the current state of education; how the new generations interact with information; how we continue to use schooling models set up at the time of the Industrial Revolution; educational systems in contexts as varied as South Korea, Silicon Valley and Finland; and what we can do to implement better forms of teaching and learning in the future. Beard will talk to Claudia Restrepo.

The pleasure of reading and writing. Alberto Manguel and Javier Cercas in conversation with Martha Ortiz

The work of the Spanish writer Javier Cercas has been translated into over thirty languages. His bibliography includes novels and essays and various mixtures of the two, as well as many translations of authors such as H.G. Wells and Quim Monzó. He has won awards in Italy, France, Chile, the United Kingdom and Spain. His latest novel, Terra Alta, has won the Premio Planeta 2019. The Argentinean-Canadian writer, publisher and translator Alberto Manguel is a member of the UK’s Royal Society of Literature and of the Argentinean Academy of Letters. As a young man he used to read books out loud to Jorge Luis Borges, who had gone blind. His extensive body of work includes over 40 books of stories, novels, biography and non-fiction. His most recent publication is Curiosity (2019). They will talk to Martha Ortiz about literary genius, the frontier between reality and fiction, and the pleasure of reading and writing.

Paolo Giordano in conversation with Ana Cristina Restrepo

Paolo Giordano (Italy) studied Physics at Turin University, graduating with honours. In 2008 he published his first novel, The Solitude of Prime Numbers, which soon became a bestseller and won the Strega Prize, Italy’s highest literary award. His most recent book is Heaven and Earth (2019) whose protagonist is Teresa, a young women who spends her summers at her grandmother’s home in a small town in the south of Italy. The ploy unfolds as her life is exposed to and transformed by Nicola, Tommaso and Bern, three boys who live on a nearby property, and she learns how others can have power, or even control -whether it be emotional, social or political- over you. Giordano will talk to Ana Cristina Restrepo.

Chiribiquete: discovering the lost world of jaguar men.
With Carlos Castaño Uribe
Carlos Castaño Uribe is an anthropologist at the Universidad de los Andes and has a PhD in American Anthropology from the Universidad Complutense of Madrid. He has stood out for his contributions to the environmental public policy of Colombia and Latin America, having assumed the direction of the System of Natural National Parks for more than a decade, the direction of the IDEAM, the direction of the Secretariat of Environment of Bogotá and the vice ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, among other positions. He was one of the expeditionaries who, during the 90's, discovered the Serranía del Chiribiquete, between the departments of Guaviare and Caquetá, today the focus of Amazonian biodiversity and one of the most important finds in the field of cave painting in the entire continent . Since then, he has worked in the investigation of this corner of the Colombian geography that represents, for him, the origins of Colombia and the home of the jaguar. .

Jennifer Ackerman in conversation with Gloria Patricia Cardona
Jennifer Ackerman (United States) has dedicated the last three decades to writing about nature and science. The author of seven books, her most recent work is the international bestseller The Genius of Birds (2017). In her talk, based on her latest book, she explores the genius of birds and gives us a close-up view of the mysteries of the brains and clever behavior of birds. Ackerman will tell us stories and show photographs that document her global research. We will learn how birds use their remarkable mental abilities, how they learn from each other, navigate, use their extraordinary memories, create artworks, communicate using systems that are similar to our own languages, and even transfer cultural traditions from bird to bird. Andrea Wulf is the author of the acclaimed The Invention of Nature, a biography that is so exciting it can be read as an adventure book. In it she tells the story of Alexander von Humboldt, the great German explorer, who opened the doors to an understanding of nature as we perceive it today. In 2019 she published The Adventures of Alexander von Humboldt, an illustrated book about the travels of this explorer, considered to be the father of Ecology. Guillermo Martínez in conversation with Ana Cristina Restrepo
The Argentinean writer Guillermo Martínez, known for his novel The Oxford Murders, translated into 40 languages and made into a feature film by Álex de la Iglesia, presents his latest novel, Los crímenes de Alicia, winner of the 2019 Nadal Novel Prize. The book describes how the famous Professor of Logic, Arthur Seldom, and a young Mathematics student join forces to solve the mystery of why a page torn from the personal diary of Lewis Carroll is so important. A series of crimes is triggered with the apparent purpose of stopping the secret of this page coming to light. In conversation with Ana Cristina Restrepo.

Philip Ball has written over twenty books about molecular chemistry and contemporary science, as well as biographies and novels. Could it be possible to create a complete human being? In conversation with Juliana Restrepo.

The writer Ángela Becerra (Colombia), published in over 50 countries and translated into 23 languages, is the winner of the 24th Fernando Lara Prize for her novel Algún día, hoy (2019), based on the true story of Betsabé Espinal, a weaver who, in 1920, aged 23, led one of the first feminist industrial strikes in the history of Colombia and of Latin America, at the Fábrica de Tejidos factory in Bello, Antioquia. The book tells the story of one of the heroines of women’s rights in Colombia, her power for personal and social transformation, and the passionate love affair that changed her life. Becerra She will talk to Ana Cristina Restrepo.

Marie Arana in conversation with Daniel Gutiérrez Ardila
The writer, publisher and journalist Marie Arana (Peru-United States) studied Russian Language and Literature at Northwestern University and did a Master’s in Linguistics and Socio-linguistics at Hong Kong University. She has been Vice-president and Senior Editor at Simon & Schuster, Chief Writer of the book section of The Washington Post and is a member of the Academic Council of the US Library of Congress. In 2013 Arana published Bolivar, a biography of the revolutionary, which describes his quest for the independence of territories that currently constitute six countries. Her latest book is Silver, Sword and Stone (2019), which is about exploitation, violence and the role of the Catholic Church in Latin America, told through the stories of a mine worker in the Peruvian Andes, a Cuban veteran of the Angolan war and a Barcelona Jesuit in Bolivia. In conversation with the historian Daniel Gutiérrez Ardila.

The Spanish journalist and writer, Marta Peirano, writes freely for newspapers and magazines about surveillance technologies, mass manipulation and Internet rights. She has been co-director of the COPYFIGHT free culture project and was the founder of the CryptoParty and HackHackers Berlin, initiatives related to Internet privacy and security. Her most popular work, El pequeño libro rojo del activista en la red, was the first book given a prologue by Edward Snowden. Her latest critical work, El enemigo conoce el sistema (2019), talks about the control of democratic processes, the mutations in social structures and the power of algorithms. Her TEDx talk on privacy has over two million views. She will talk to Alejandro Marín.

At a moment in history when it is as relevant to talk about “the age of information” as about “the age of the image”, it is no surprise that a website like Pictoline has experienced a huge rise on the Internet after its creation in 2015. With its news-related cartoons, known as “bacons”, Pictoline creates interesting, entertaining, informative, educational items of content, closely aligned to the current affairs of the moment. Eduardo Salles, the creator of this digital space for visual information, talks about Pictoline’s success with Pascual Gaviria.

Juan Perro sextet concert

The former vocalist of the Spanish band Radio Futura, Santiago Auserón, presents his new repertory under the name Juan Perro, combining the Afro-American inheritance (the blues, R&B, rock, soul and jazz standards) with the Afro-Latin -particularly Cuban- tradition and the musics of the Iberian Peninsula. At this gala, Juan Perro shares the stage with five top jazz musicians: guitarist Joan Vinyals, trumpet player David Pastor, saxophone player Gabriel Amargant, bassist Isaac Coll and drummer Pere Foved. Auserón completes the unbeatable sextet of Juan Perro. General ticket.
