Publishing Talent 2. Bookshops and the virus

Lecture by Jorge Carrión. Pablo Braun, Verónica Mendoza and Julio César Zavala Vega in conversation with Xavier Vidal

Querétaro 2020,

The closure of bookshops caused a massive shock to the book market. Some booksellers continued to trade over the Internet and others chose to suspend their activity completely. In some cases this was because they had no choice, in other cases, it was done to contribute to the public health situation. Meanwhile, the giants of e-commerce, with no restrictions and abusing their dominant position (as well as their workers and delivery drivers), took advantage of the enormous possibilities for sales that appeared overnight. However, the bookshops –once again− have survived the crisis by generating a great capital of solidarity: they have become the standard for people who support local business and who have a commitment to a more sustainable society. Based on the lecture given by the writer and critic Jorge Carrión (Spain), the conversation is taken up by Pablo Braun (Argentina), Managing Director of the bookshop and publisher Eterna Cadencia; Verónica Mendoza (Mexico), Managing Director of the Carlos Fuentes bookshop in Guadalajara; and Julio César Zavala Vega (Peru), publisher and bookseller, with the Lima bookshop Escena Libre. Moderated by the Barcelona bookseller Xavier Vidal (Nollegiu Llibreria).
