Spain’s recent history cannot be fully understood without examining the role played by the newspaper El País. A benchmark of modern journalism, a defender of freedoms when they were almost a pipe dream, and key to recounting who we have been and how we have fared over the years. To mark the celebration of its first 50 years, the writer Javier Cercas has just published El periódico de la democracia ('The Newspaper of Democracy'), in which he recounts the history of El País from the perspective of a reader—a privileged reader, it must be said, as he is also a contributor to its Opinion section.
At the end of the event, the author will be signing copies of his books
