Bolivian writer Rodrigo Hasbún and Mexican novelist Brenda Navarro join award-winning translator Ezra Fitz for a conversation about writing personal stories across countries, languages, and cultures. Living and writing away from one's place of origin can transform the way writers approach memory, family, identity, displacement, and the experiences they carry with them.
Drawing on their own work and experiences, Hasbún and Navarro will discuss how distance and migration shape the stories we tell and our relationship with the places we come from. Fitz will add the perspective of translation, exploring what happens when those stories cross another border and enter a new language, culture, and society.
Moderated by John Bradley, the conversation will explore how stories travel, how they change as they move between places and languages, and how literature can create connections across borders.
