How To Make A Book With Steidl and Max Beckmann – DEPARTURE

Venue: La Cárcel–Filmoteca de Segovia

6.15pm, Screening: How To Make A Book With Steidl
(Gereon Wetzel and Jörg Adolph, 2010. Duration: 88 minutes)
Gerhard Steidl regards his workshop as a ‘laboratory’ rather than a printer’s. He avoids being involved in routine commercial activity via his photography books. Each book has to be unique. Hence both printer and editor belong to an ancient tradition where artists also regarded themselves as craftsmen.

(Michael Trabitzsch, 2013. Duration: 93 minutos)
A moving documentary about the life and work of one of the most prominent painters of the 20th century, Max Beckmann (1884–1950). The focus of the film is on his enigmatic paintings, which typically express a life between the wars, spent around Berlin, Frankfurt, Paris, Amsterdam, and finally New York. Art historians and the words of Beckmann’s own diaries and letters help to decipher his work.
