Rosa Vásquez Espinoza, who holds a PhD in microbial genetics and bioinformatics, is a chemical biologist, founder of Amazon Research International and a National Geographic explorer. Recognised for her pioneering research into extreme ecosystems, Amazonian microbiology and stingless bees, she has championed environmental legislation in Peru and worked alongside indigenous communities. She has been recognised by the BBC as the only Peruvian on its list of the 100 most influential women in the world; by Forbes Peru, on its list of the country’s 50 most powerful women; and by the Peruvian government, through the Ministry of Mining and Petroleum, with the Order of Merit for Women 2025, and by the Congress of the Republic, before the Committee on Science, Innovation and Technology, for her contribution to science, technology and innovation in Peru. She is also the author of the book The Spirit of the Rainforest. Her scientific leadership integrates ancestral knowledge and modern science, promoting conservation, education and community empowerment on a global scale.
