In these changing times, it has become imperative to reflect on human creativity in a world in which artificial intelligences are also beginning to create. Hay Festival hosts a debate on the role that the humanities should play in the age of artificial intelligence and the intergenerational impact that it entails. In an conversation, moderated by journalist and author Marta Garcia-Aller, Nuria Oliver, a renowned scientist who co-founded and directs the ELLIS Alicante Foundation, an institute dedicated to exploring the impact of AI on humanity and John Maeda, a prominent American computer designer and engineer, known for his groundbreaking work at the intersection of technology, art, and the humanities who also holds the role of Vice President of Design and Artificial Intelligence at Microsoft, will delve into the imperative of AI, its impact on the humanities and its derivatives.

This conversation will be joined by two young people who are currently developing their studies in the field of technology: Teresa Lufuluabo, an orchestra conductor converted into a programmer thanks to Escuela 42 and its disruptive programming campus promoted in Spain by Fundación Telefónica, and Juan Heslop, a recent graduate in Data Science from IE University, winner of poetry and essay prizes from the IE Foundation, singer and digital analyst in a consulting firm.

How do big corporations and governments use our data to manipulate our behaviour? Up to what point should this be permitted, and how should regulations deal with actions that end up affecting the realities of our societies? Carissa Véliz (United Kingdom) is an Associate Lecturer at Oxford University’s Institute for Practical Ethics, and a regular contributor to publications including El País, The Guardian, The New York Times, New Statesman and The Independent. In her book Privacy is Power (Transworld, 2020) she analyses these matters, as well as others that are of critical importance to our time, arguing in favour of the prohibition of the sale of personal data. In conversation with Mónica Meltis.

In this engaging dialogue, Maeda, renowned artist and designer, author of several books including How to Speak Machine: Computational Thinking for the Rest of Us and Sidhu, prominent computer engineer, chief scientist, and author of Engineering Innovation: A Practical Guide to Creating Something New, will bring together their expertise to explore the limitless possibilities that occur when art, technology and innovation meet.

Is the human brain still evolving? Are the new technologies affecting it? The Argentinean neurologist Facundo Manes studied at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Buenos Aires and is a Doctor of Science from the University of Cambridge. He has published various books and produced television programmes such as Los enigmas del cerebro and Cerebro argentino, together with the Literature graduate Mateo Niro. His latest book, written with Niro, is called El cerebro del futuro: ¿Cambiará la vida moderna nuestra esencia?, and it tackles themes such as interdisciplinary work, the impact of the new technologies on the brain, neuroethics, how to treat mental illnesses and the role of science when dealing with social problems. He will talk to the BBC journalist Carlos Serrano.

Marta Peirano (Spain) is a journalist and researcher who specialises in the relations between power and technology. Her work is known for its critical and analytical insights, investigating the dangers of concentrated power structures and addictive digital dynamics, and has received international recognition. Her latest book is Contra el futuro, resistencia ciudadana contra el feudalismo climático. According to her, there are solutions to climate change within our reach and her book sets out some strategies for citizen action in order to counter the acceleration of climate feudalism and disaster capitalism; a new anti-apocalyptic approach that builds hope for the future. In conversation with Olivia Zerón.

The rapid development of technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotics mean that the debates about their advantages and ethical implications are constantly being updated. Digital culture is another area whether our attitudes need to be continuously revised. Nerea Luis Mingueza is a Doctor of Computing Science and an enthusiastic educator in matters related to artificial intelligence and robotics. Mónica Rikic is an electronic artist and a creative programmer. Her work explores the unknown land that lies at the interface between human and machine.
