The 2006 British fictional drama The Queen centres on the response of the royal family to the untimely death of Diana, Princess of Wales, on 31 August 1997. The Queen’s initial view that the funeral of her former daughter-in-law should be given the treatment of one whose official status is outside the royal family changes in light of public pressure, the influence of Prime Minister Tony Blair, and more significantly the opinion of the Prince of Wales. Queen Elizabeth II was portrayed by Helen Mirren – who received the Best Actress Academy Award, Golden Globe Award and BAFTA Award – in this film directed by Stephen Frears, who was nominated for the Best Director Academy Award and for the Golden Globe Award. The Queen was also nominated for the Best Film Academy Award and the Golden Globe Award 2006, and received the Premio Goya for Best European Film in 2007.
