"You don’t take photos with a camera, but with your head and your heart.” So says Bernardo Pérez, whose viewfinder has been aimed at those black holes around the planet suffering from violence, extreme poverty and the abandonment of human rights. His camera was also a witness to some of the main events of the Spanish Transition to Democracy, after he joined the founding team of El País in 1976, as well sporting events such as the Olympic Games, heads of state, international conflicts… Pérez has accompanied writers such as Juan Goytisolo and journalists like Maruja Torres on projects for El País Semanal magazine, assignments that have taken him around the Americas and Europe. He will talk to the Hay Festival Segovia about his experience, putting words to the Compromiso con la realidad exhibition that will accompany the festival, putting a selection of his images on show.
Pérez will talk to the journalist Aurelio Martín.

We celebrate ten years of the Hay Festival in Peru with the publication of a commemorative book, which compiles 15 memorable conversations that captured the interest of the public as part of the festival. We talk to the book’s editor, Dante Trujillo (Perú), the author Jeremías Gamboa (Perú), the photographer Daniel Mordzinski (Argentina), the author Karina Pacheco (Perú) and the journalist Clara Elvira Ospina (Colombia) about the positive and inspiring effects of the conversations that the Hay Festival Arequipa has made possible in the decade it has been running.

Hubertus von Hohenlohe, known as a ‘sportsman, globetrotter and bon vivant’, he is a multidisciplinary artist whose creative career spans photography, design, performance and media. Born into the European aristocracy and educated in philosophy and economics, he has forged a career defined by curiosity and irreverence. A Leica ambassador and permanent traveller, his photographs often blur the line between self and scene, celebrity and anonymity, turning moments into reflections of the viewer's own gaze. His work has been exhibited in prestigious venues such as the Belvedere Museum (Vienna), the Hungarian National Museum, the Fundación Cajasol (Seville), Fundación Unicaja (Málaga) and the Chiostro del Bramante (Rome), among others.
Hubertus will discuss his work with Sema D’Acosta, independent curator, art critic, teacher and researcher, one of Spain's foremost specialists in photography.

Absence as Stimulus is a new creation by National Photography Prize winner Alberto García-Alix.Conceived as a visual lecture, the author reflects on how absence —its presence and its vital force— shapes and permeates his work, acting as both guiding thread and catalyst in his photographs. Accompanying his spoken reflections, García-Alix presents 68 images, most of them unpublished and taken over the last 15 years. He explores how absence is embedded in everything around us: in nature, architecture, objects, and even in portraiture, "because something always escapes us from the subject." In his own words: "absence is a stimulus."
The event will be introduced by Sema D’Acosta, an independent curator, art critic, educator, and researcher, considered one of Spain’s leading visual arts specialists.
