This writer, shortlisted for the Prix Goncourt, Miguel Bonnefoy (Venezuela/France) returns with L’inventeur, a new novel that has something of the quixotic about it and which brings to life the figure of Augustin Mouchot. Practically unknown today, Mouchot was a mid-19th-century French inventor and pioneer in the use of solar energy, who managed to create a machine able to produce a block of ice using only the light of the sun. However, his extraordinary achievements were buried by the economic interests involved in the coal trade. In conversation with Orlando Mazeyra, the author will talk about this striking figure, whose inventions could have completely transformed the course of history as we know it.

Democracy, knowledge and freedom

Instituto Cultural Peruano Alemán
Read more
What is the relationship between democracy and knowledge? How can we bring into harmony a commitment to objective fact with freedom of political opinion? In our so-called “knowledge society”, knowing is not only the motor of economic growth and innovation, but now holds a central place in political discourse and practice. At the same time, this creates very particular forms of political scepticism, such as disinformation, negationism and the conspiracy theories that spread on the Internet. Even the concept of freedom has become an ideological tool within the agenda of certain political sectors. In this conversation with Alberto Vergara, the philosopher Daniel Innerarity (Spain) will talk about his latest book, La libertad democrática (2023), which deals with our understandings of democracy and freedom.

Wendy Ramos presents a very special project, with her own texts and illustrations. In her book we can discover the story of a curious and affectionate character: a ball of thread that, from one moment to the next, can take on life and become a piece of something. This character, full of life and hope, needs to find its origin and its place in the world. So begins a journey of exploration, seeking its own identity. Over the course of the pages, this “something” asks everyone it knows what it is, and each one tells it something different; some say it is a dog, some a rabbit. This search is full of humour and reflection. When it meets a character that helps it resolve its conundrum of identity, it decides that it need not be one thing or another, but rather can be something completely new and different.
