Is today’s Peru ungovernable?

Auditorio Colegio de Abogados
Read more

Two experts analyse the current political state of Peru, one characterised by corruption and violence, but also by possibilities for reinvention. José Alejandro Godoy is a political scientist, university lecturer and author of a range of books. His works El último dictador: Vida y gobierno de Alberto Fujimori and Los herederos de Fujimori draw a portrait of the man who led Peru during the 1990s, who was behind the government that the author identifies as the last authoritarian government of the 20th century, and they also go into the continuity produced by his children. His most recent book is Peligro: Orden de disparar, which goes a little further back in time and covers events in the country between 1980 and 1986. Fernando Tuesta Soldevilla, one of the most lucid and informed political commentators today offers a detailed look at the crises that the country’s political organisations and institutions are undergoing. His most recent work, La reforma política: Ideas y debates para un buen gobierno, is a compilation of columns and articles about this matter, written over the course of three decades, and which proposes alternatives for a reformation of democracy that offers citizens reasons for hope and optimism. In conversation with Mabel Cáceres.

One of the best-known Peruvian writers today, the author of The Distance between Us, You Shall Leave Your Land and Algún día te mostraré el desierto, Renato Cisneros presents El mundo que vimos arder, the story of two Peruvians, separated by decades, who leave their native land. One seeks a new life in Spain after a divorce; the other emigrates to the United States and faces the horrors of the Second World War. Between two different times and two apparently dissimilar viewpoints, the novel reflects on war, exile, love and identity. In conversation with Denise Arregui.

About the political crisis, and the difference between hearing and listening

UNSA (Paraninfo)
The current political crisis being experienced in Peru, triggered in December 2022, has involved a series of protests in different regions around the country, with lethal consequences for over 60 people. An audio-visual artifact lasting around 15 minutes has motivated this session involving the participation of Alejandra Ballón, a Doctor of Social Anthropology from the School of Higher Studies in Social Sciences in Paris, and Ángel María Manrique, former Ombudsman in Arequipa. Together with Víctor Vich they will try to clarify the testimonies of the people who experienced, as participants or as affected individuals, these difficult days of protest and their terrible consequences. On 12 and 13 July 2023, managed by the Grupo Impulsor de Arequipa and a citizen coalition, and with the financial support of the United Nations and the Ford Foundation, dozens of representatives from peasant communities, trades, trade unions, villages and managers from various industries, both for and against the protests, were invited to give their opinions before a dedicated panel in Arequipa city. This round table reflects the need to (re-)learn how to listen if we want to overcome the country’s serious problems.

The poetry of an album

Instituto Cultural Peruano Alemán
Read more

Based on the publication of Contrapunto, an album of photos that explores the relationship between text and image, this event looks at how poetic discourse can leave behind its habitual language to make an image with words, and how images activate the need to talk about them in words. We read the images and look at the poems. Víctor Vich, a Doctor in Hispano-American Literature from Georgetown University and the author of several books on poetry, art and cultural policy, will talk about this proposal, which has combined the archive of a photographer -Lucero Del Castillo- with the author’s knowledge as a lecturer in poetry. This event will demonstrate the uniqueness of a book that is innovative in its form and the way in which it offers a sequence (always open to the reader) that involves an examination of the conditions in which we inhabit the world. In conversation with Nereida Apaza Mamani.

Recuerdos de octubre is a single-act solo performance that explores the complexities of inter-generational relationships among women of the same family. The dramatist Mariela Noles Cotito (Peru) is a lecturer in the Department of Social and Political Sciences at the University of the Pacific and a researcher into matters of human rights, interculturality, gender equality and public policies related to social inclusion.
