Hay Festival Arequipa 2023 was held November 9-12, with 109 activities with 145 guests from 15 countries. We will offer 17 talks and workshops for students at the Hay Joven programme and 7 events for children at Hay Festivalito.

Hay Forum Moquegua took place on 8 November with four activities on education and current affairs.

Lindsey Hilsum (United Kingdom) has reported on conflicts and refugee movements in the Ukraine, Syria, Mali, Iraq, Palestine, Libya and Kosovo and has recently covered the return of the Taliban in Afghanistan. She was the only foreign English-speaking correspondent in Rwanda when the genocide began. A press and television journalist, a regular contributor to outlets such as The Guardian, The Observer and Granta, in 2019 she published In Extremis, a biography of the war correspondent Marie Colvin. Winner of numerous awards, she will talk about her work, career and experiences with Christiane Félip Vidal, author of Mujeres en conflictos.

At this event with the British journalist Emma Graham-Harrison, a doctor and a war correspondent will talk about the present conflict, whose repercussions go beyond the borders of countries and continents. Lindsey Hilsum (United Kingdom) has reported on conflicts and refugee movements in Syria, Mali, Iraq, Palestine, Libya, Kosovo, Afghanistan and, of course, Ukraine. Henry Marsh (United Kingdom) is a renowned former neurosurgeon and author of publishing successes such as Do No Harm and the more recent And Finally. Matters of Life and Death, which tells the story of his experiences as a cancer patient. With a long career in the profession, Henry Marsh is known for having supported the development and practice of neuroscience in the Ukraine.

An event that deals with the disappearance of women, told through fiction and non-fiction. Alejandra Ballón (Peru) is a Doctor of Social Anthropology from the School of Higher Studies in Social Sciences in Paris. This artist and researcher is the spokeswoman for the Ni Una Menos movement in Peru, which fights femicide and gender violence. Teresina Muñoz-Nájar (Peru) is the author of Desaparecidas, a work that compiles the voices of mothers, fathers and siblings who have suffered the disappearance of loved ones. Dolores Reyes (Argentina) is the author of the acclaimed international success Cometierra (2019) and its sequel, Miseria (2023). In the narrative universe created by Reyes, the protagonist is a girl who can know the location of dead or disappeared women just by putting a handful of earth in her mouth. The Colombian lawyer Humberto de la Calle was Minister of the Government during the César Gaviria presidency, Vice-President of the Republic and ambassador to Spain and the UK in the late 1990s. In 2001 he presided over the deliberations that resulted in the OAS’s Democratic Charter. After leaving public life and becoming involved in academia, journalism and law, in 2012 he was appointed Chief Negotiator of the government’s delegation in the peace process with FARC. After signing the Final Agreement at the Colón Theatre, he was a presidential candidate in 2018. Today he is a senator in the Colombian National Congress, and within that institution is a member of the Primary Council, whose legislative work focusses on matters related to peace, the guarantee of human rights, social reforms, the fight against inequality and preserving the environment. He has recently published a novel based on real events, La inverosímil muerte de Hércules Pretorius, about a young lawyer who had always been attracted to the idea of bringing about a peaceful social revolution.
