Hay Festival Arequipa 2023 – Science & Technology

Welcome to the Hay Festival Arequipa 2023 programme. This celebration of literature, culture and ideas will run 9-12 November, presenting 109 activities with 145 guests from 15 countries. We will offer 17 talks and workshops for students at the Hay Joven programme and 7 events for children at Hay Festivalito.

Hay Forum Moquegua will take place on 8 November with four activities on education and current affairs.

The university community and senior citizens have free access to up to 10 tickets. More information.

Marta Peirano is the author of the books El rival de Prometeo: Vidas de Autómatas Ilustres, El pequeño libro rojo del activista en la red, El enemigo conoce el sistema and Contra el futuro. The last of these was written to help us face the climate crisis with citizen action tools that challenge what the author calls “climate feudalism”. Marta Peirano was involved in founding the Culture sections of ADN and eldiario.es, has been a director of the Copyfight initiative, and is co-founder of the Hacks/Hackers Berlin and Cryptoparty Berlin groups. Her TED talk ¿Por qué me vigilan, si no soy nadie? has been seen over four million times on YouTube. At this event, we will discuss technological sovereignty, democracy, the environment and what the future will bring. She will talk with Ricardo Grundy, Director of the School of Political Science and Government at UCSM.

The dizzying advances in the field of Artificial Intelligence might trigger feelings of awe, but also of fear. At this event, three experts in the field of AI come together to reveal some of the myths regarding this technology, dealing with matters such as privacy and data security, the automation of work, and the impact of AI on society in general. Richard Firth-Godbehere (United Kingdom) is a writer and researcher, and one of the world’s great experts on the emotions. He is currently studying human-machine interaction and the place of human emotions in a digital context dominated by technology. Daniel Innerarity (Spain) is a Professor of Political and Social Philosophy and holds the Artificial Intelligence Chair at the European University Institute in Florence. Marta Peirano (Spain) is a writer and journalist, a specialist on the intersection between technology and power. In conversation with Sabrina Duque.​​

As a major historical oil and gas exporter, Peru is at the heart of the debate into the matter of energy sovereignty and the rights of a population to access these sources of energy. This matter takes on an even greater importance in the context of the current global energy crisis. At this event, the guests will talk about the economic, social and environmental dimensions of this problem, as well as the obstacles and the possibilities that the country has in its search for energy sovereignty. Josefa Sánchez Contreras belongs to the Zoque people of Chimalapas (Mexico) and carries out research into territorial defence, indigenous rights and the history of rebellions and colonialisms; his latest book is Colonialismo energético. The Yanesha social and environmental activist Vabi Miguel Toribio (Peru) is a leader, translator and interpreter recognised by the Peruvian Ministry of Culture. In conversation with José Luis Ramos.
