Hay Festival Arequipa 2023 – Film

Welcome to the Hay Festival Arequipa 2023 programme. This celebration of literature, culture and ideas will run 9-12 November, presenting 109 activities with 145 guests from 15 countries. We will offer 17 talks and workshops for students at the Hay Joven programme and 7 events for children at Hay Festivalito.

Hay Forum Moquegua will take place on 8 November with four activities on education and current affairs.

The university community and senior citizens have free access to up to 10 tickets. More information.

Hiding them in the walls of their homes, and even eating them, this documentary collects the testimony of people who did everything they could to stop the authorities of the dictatorships of the Southern Cone in the 1970s finding incriminating texts. It is also about those who are now collecting some of these books and bringing them back to the light. This event will be part of the South to South series, in which the Hay Festival offers a forum for some of the most innovative voices of the global South, in order to share different ways of seeing the world, as well as non-Western solutions to the problems that beset us. Talking to Emma Graham-Harrison will be the Mexican filmmaker Natalia Beristain, director of films such as Los adioses and Ruido; Carlos Moreno, the French-Colombian scientist and urban planning expert, famous for creating the idea of the 15-minute city; and Djamila Ribeiro, the Brazilian philosopher and activist, known for publications such as Lugar de fala and Quem tem medo do feminismo negro?

In Peliculachakuna/Cortometrajes, Gonçalo M. Tavares (Portugal) returns once again to that very personal literary voice that has made him one of the most outstanding writers in the Portuguese language. By investigating the complexity of the great contemporary debates, the author builds up a kaleidoscope of small daily scenes told through cinematic and dramatic techniques that invite us to view the world in a very different way. In conversation with the Quechua-language translator Jorge Alejandro Ccoyllurpuma, Tavares will present this work, translated for the first time into Quechua in an excellent bilingual edition published by La Travesía.

The film director Natalia Beristain (Mexico) is one of the most high-profile filmmakers in Spanish-language cinema. With films such as Los adioses and the recent Ruido, screened at festivals such as Cannes and Venice, her work has been acclaimed for many reasons, including the carefully worked scripts and the literary character of her narratives. She will talk about her most recent film, Ruido, with the director Miguel Barreda.
